Why is Hell a thing?

Hi! I’m not religious in any way, have never read a bible or stepped into church in my life, but i’m curious about something.

Why is Hell a thing? If God loves everyone, why would he send you to Hell? If he can forgive you for your sins, why is Hell even an idea?
