Pearls before swine

Hey guys, I just have a question because I am lacking understanding on this verse.

Matthew 7:6 ESV “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.”

I know what I’ve heard it explained as, but I’d like to understand it a bit more.
