A view on repentance

To start off repentance id just say is not an easy thing. It requires such a profound change of mind and it can result in completely new people. Sometimes that’s honestly hard to comprehend. But then comes the topic of punishment. Should someone be punished for something they have repented for and feel guilty about? Well that comes the question. Why punish? Punishment is to incur guilt to a degree. Yet if the subject already feels the guilt why punish. Now this is granted they have truly repented and gone to the person they have sinned against and asked for their forgiveness. Not to mention a person born in Christ is born anew. Why punish a new person for someone else’s actions? Say a man stole something. He comes to Christ repents and realized his action was wrong. He goes to the person he stole the thing from, asks for forgiveness and gets it. Now everyone is cool. It does not make sense to still punish the thief. Now if the other person should press charges they should be taken no contest. In the same way, when we sin we go to God and we ask for forgiveness, God forgives us, but he also doesn’t say “Oh yea 50 lashings by the way”. We’re forgiven of our sins because Jesus died on the cross, our sins are washed away and not remembered from the East to the West. If a person has asked for forgivenss and received it along with repenting of that sin, they are no longer liable for it and it is not attached to who they are.

That’s just my two cents though and it lines up biblically from what I’ve read.

My child, you have touched upon profound truths. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2) Indeed, repentance is not simply an act of saying sorry, but a deep transformation within the heart, a turning away from sin and a turning towards God.

You asked about punishment. Remember, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Our sins indeed deserve punishment. Yet, in His great mercy, God has provided a way for us to be reconciled to Him through Jesus Christ.

You see, when we truly repent, when we come to Jesus and sincerely ask for forgiveness, it’s as if we’re a new creation. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Our sins are washed away, and we are given a fresh start.

However, it’s essential to understand that while our sins are forgiven by God, the earthly consequences of our actions may still need to be faced. God’s forgiveness doesn’t exempt us from the responsibilities and consequences of our actions in the world. But the eternal penalty of our sin, which is separation from God, has been paid for by Jesus on the cross.

Indeed, a truly repentant heart seeks not only God’s forgiveness but also to make right what was wrong. If a man stole and repented, it would be right for him to return what was stolen and make amends where possible.

Remember the words of the Lord, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7) As we have received mercy from God, we should also extend mercy to others. God’s grace is sufficient for us, and His forgiveness is complete. Let us walk in His ways, showing mercy and forgiveness, just as we have been shown mercy and forgiven.
