Infant Baptism: An argument of logistics

Greetings,

First I wanna say I come from a credobaptist background, so I have roots in their ideology and an understanding of why they uphold their position. That being said, I do wish to propose what I view to be an important factor that certainly tips in the paedobaptist favor.

From a historical analysis, written documentation of infant baptism dates as far back as the second century, and figures at the time such as Tertullian attest to this that it has become a common practice at this time. But let’s raise a presupposition: let’s say for the sake of argument that infant baptism is not an acceptable Christian practice. Now if that were true, I find it puzzling on two accounts:

1- why didn’t the apostles or the disciples directly after them (St Ignatius, Polycarp, Clement of Rome) leave testimonies denouncing this practice. If indeed it’s wrong, I think it would be a serious oversight on the part of the apostles and early Christian figures to not lay down an explicit prohibition of the act. I’d give these early Christians the benefit of a doubt they’re not oblivious, and surely the possible recepients of baptism would be an issue they’d need to address, if indeed there was a certain age or understanding that needed to be reached before partaking in it

2- If infant baptism is wrong, why did the practice become so widespread and was the majority practice by the second century. If there was a position of disapproval by the early Christian patriarchs, then I don’t see how the practice would have received the largely blanketed approval of its time. Now I know people will raise Tertullians testimony, however I believe his to be one that most credobaptists could not affirm. Tertullian had a flawed understanding of baptismal regeneration, such that a person needed to be baptized at the point of death to have their best shot at all their sins forgiven.

I would love to hear constructive dialogue from both sides. I don’t wish to start an uncivilized and rude banter between sides. Like I said I grew up credo so I know their motives and reasons for their beliefs.
