Is God Involved or Are We On Our Own?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I’ve often heard from non-believers, that if there is a God, how can terrible things happen. Usually the answer is that we have free will, to do good or evil, and that is why terrible things can happen.

I’ve been thinking though, if that is the case, wouldn’t that mean we are kinda on our own down here? And that God just interferes when He wants? If nothing terrible has happened to us is that just luck or God’s doing. If it’s the latter, why reserve that for some people and not others?

Example: there are people who have been sexually abused by their own parents when they were children. I never was, so am I just lucky? I feel like most Christians would say that was God’s protection. But why would He protect me but not other children? Either He has the power to stop it but choses not to, or we are just own our own and left to our own devices down here. I’m not sure which is more depressing.
