The concept of Hell

Hey everyone! I just converted to Christianity 6 months ago so I’m still learning. I feel like I might be a lukewarm Christian because my faith isn’t that strong and I recently stopped going to Church all together but that doesn’t mean my journey with God has came to an end.

So, I just have a few questions about hell. What really happens in Hell and why do people go there? Is it a place of punishment?

Growing up in a non-christian household I was always taught that good people go to heaven while the bad people are denied entry and are sent to hell to be punished for the hurt they’ve brought onto others but that isn’t the case for Christianity.

John 3:16- For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

So from my knowledge of what I’ve learnt so far, people of other religions, atheists and lukewarm christians will be denied entry to heaven and I sometimes wonder, why? why are they being forced to spent eternity in hell? what is their sin? for not believing in Jesus? is that why they’re punished? to me it sounds a bit toxic if you put it this way because it sounds like if you believe in Allah you’ll go to hell because you didn’t believe in Jesus Christ.

So if a r*pist had forced unwilling sex onto a girl and gets her pregnant in which she is being forced to keep it because lets say abortion is illegal in her country and it ends up ruining her life because not only did she have to drop out of school to take care of her child but she also has to shed blood sweat and tears to work jobs that she qualifies for with a mere high school diploma. Her life is ruined, her bright future was ruined single handedly but if her attacker surrenders himself to the Lord our Father and repents for his sin before being forgiven then he is allowed entry to Heaven while the girl he just ruined is sent to hell because she does not believe in Jesus. I want to know why? why does the man who caused her so much pain be let into Heaven while she goes to Hell just because she doesn’t believe in God?
