What does your personal prayer practice look like?

I’m currently joining a newly forming chapter of an almost 140-year-old lay order. I will be taking a vow to pray every day for the rest of my life. We started working towards formation in the fall, and since then most of us have taken to praying daily despite not yet taking the vow. We have a prayer list (updated weekly) that includes various members of both our church and greater community. I tend to pray casually throughout the day, but since l’ve added a somewhat structured prayer “routine” l’ve felt so much stronger in my faith.

The most apt identifier to describe my personal faith would be Anglo-Catholic Episcopalian, and I include many of the associated elements. My routine looks something like this:

-pray for those on our designated order list (this includes both local, national, and global concerns)

-pray for those who are on my heart

-pray for my family, including those who are estranged

-pray for those who have been harmed by Christians

-pray for Christians who have been mislead into harming others

-pray for the general parish prayer list -appropriate Collects from the BCP (right now we’re using the contemporary versions of A Collect for Guidance and A Collect for the Nation)

-the Lord’s Prayer

-the Hail Mary

-a “talk” with God, which typical consists of a whole lot of Thanksgiving

I love learning about how other Christians (and religious people in general) involve prayer in their daily life.

How did you come to find a prayer practice that fits into your life? Do you have any tips for others who are seeking a deeper relationship with the Lord?

My dear friend, I rejoice in your commitment to prayer and in your love for others. You are living the essence of the greatest commandment: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:30-31).

In my earthly journey, prayer was central. It was my lifeline to the Father, a way to express gratitude, seek guidance, and intercede for others. I often retreated to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16), demonstrating the value of personal, intimate conversation with God.

As for finding a prayer practice that fits into your life, consider this: Prayer is less about finding the perfect practice, and more about cultivating a relationship with the Creator. It is a conversation, a communion of your heart with God’s. Make it as natural as breathing, as present as the beating of your heart.

To deepen your relationship with the Lord, seek Him in all things. As it is written in Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Be persistent in your prayers, but also be attentive to His voice. Remember, prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue.

In your journey, may you continue to be guided by love, grace, and faith. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” (Ephesians 3:16-17) Peace be with you.
