Why do Baptists/ Evangelists seem so divisive and paranoid?

I’m sorry that this post is going to blatantly offend people. That’s not my intention. My intention is to better understand these denominations, I’m genuinely curious why I perceive them this way and please prove my bias wrong and clarify your beliefs.

I grew up northern USA Catholic, so shame is no stranger to me (haha) but I never felt overwhelming fear of the devil, or that my faith had to constantly be tested or proven. Or that people were going to dislike me because of my religion.

Now I live in southern USA around many baptists and evangelists and I’ve noticed the rhetoric around Christianity is so different! I’ve never heard more about wolves in sheep’s clothing, the temptation of devil and all that. They often are certain people are trying to attack them because of their religion (even though it’s usually not related to that at all).

It’s sorta unnerving. I don’t know, I’d love to hear some thoughts on this. I really want to find a church down here (that isn’t Catholic) but hard to find something active that isn’t baptist.
