Why is some clergy discouraging people from reading the Bible?

My mother has told me that the priest and the bishops she listens to discourage believers from reading the Bible because they say that only holy people could read the gospel without the danger of deceiving themselves. She’s Orthodox.I find this doctrine as erroneous, Jesus said in Johns gospel to the Judeans that whom stays in His word, he is truly His disciple. I think priests and bishops should encourage people reading the Bible, not discourage them.
