I was at a church that focused entirely on Charlie Kirk and his life, is this idolatry?
I went to two churches. First I went to my home church, then I visited a friends’ church. At my home church, the pastor there took five minutes before the service to acknowledge all the incidents that occurred last week and told us how we should approach these thoughts we have about them, prayed for it all, then continued with the message. Huge difference.
At my friend’s church it felt more like a funeral service and it focused more on Charlie than The Lord. He talked about Kirk and his life the ENTIRE service and even said some untrue things. This pastor had a memorial image of Charlie taking up the whole screen the ENTIRE service, and whenever the pastor would pull up scripture, an image of Charlie was in the corner. Before the altar was opened at the end, he played a three minute video dedicated to Charlie.
Once that was done at first the pastor led the congregation in prayer and something he said was, “lord help me live a life that honors your name and honors the scriptures.” Then the pastor said “help me live a life like Charlie Kirk. Bold. Unapologetic. Passionate. Integrity.” I did not repeat that part and I remained silent. I want my faith and life to be centered on Jesus, not a man. The pastor also made no other mention of the other violent events that happened last week, he focused on one man. I’m not rejecting the idea of acknowledging someone’s death, but Jesus was not the center and the man became the model. He elevated Charlie to a place of spiritual focus that belongs to the Father and the Son.
So yeah, does this sound like idolatry or at least crosses into the territory of idolatry?
