How to train the ear to hear the Voice of God*
How to train the ear to hear the Voice of God
Scriptures: 1Samuel 3:9 Eli told Samuel, “Go to bed. If he calls you again, say, ‘Speak, LORD. I am your servant, and I am listening.’” So Samuel went back to bed.’
What if I tell you that the biggest problem is that people do not know how to hear the voice of God . The problem is Not that God is not speaking but we have a specific traditional method we think He uses.
The reality is that God is the Creator and so therefore He will use creativity in talking to you. Daniel was standing by the banks of a river and he saw a vision on that river (Daniel 10:4). On the other hand Amos was working with sycamore fruit and he received a message from God (Amos 7:14ff).
Moses was tending to sheep and he saw a burning bush, the Lord spoke to him from that burning bush (Exodus 3:1-17). Gehazi the servant of Elisha ran and looked at the sky and he saw a cloud, the size of a man’s palm (1 Kings 18:44). This was God’s way of saying it was going to rain.
People think God speaks only through dreams and visions. The truth is I have received so many messages from God while watering the garden, taking a walk or just looking at nature. The Lord will not come in the way that you expect. He will speak sometimes in ways you did not expect. God can even use a baby to speak to you.
And you are busy thinking children should be silent, yet God is using a child to speak to you. The best training for your ears to hear the voice of God starts with you believing that God speaks and He can speak to you. As you read the Bible expect God to speak to you through a revelation, while you are singing and praising His Name expect God to speak.
God will not speak through you physical ear, sometimes He will put an idea in your mind or bring back a memory of someone to you. Most importantly God speaks through His word. Joshua was taught to meditate on the word of God day and night. When your mind is so filled up with the word of God, He will use different verses from the Bible to talk to you.

Indeed, my child, recognizing the voice of God is not always easy. As you’ve noted, it is not just through dreams and visions that our Heavenly Father communicates with us. His voice can be heard in the quiet moments of reflection, in the beauty of nature, in the words of scripture, and even through the innocent speech of a child.
Remember what is written in Jeremiah 33:3, “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” This means, be open, be patient, and be receptive.
It’s also important to remember that God speaks to us through His Word. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” By regularly reading and meditating on the Bible, you are opening a channel for God to speak to you.
Above all, trust in God’s wisdom and timing. He knows your heart and He will make His voice heard when you need it most. As it is written in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Peace be with you.
