Is it disrespectful for non-religious people to wear Rosary’s?
I myself are not that religious. I respect the religion completely, I’m just not part of it myself. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of people at my school, especially boys wearing rosaries. I searched it up and i’m pretty sure it’s something about devotion to Mary and nothing crazy but it is still special because it represents your overall commitment to Christianity. I’m not 100% sure if I got this right, please correct me if I’m wrong, but this is what I picked up. For reference I’m a freshman in high school and every “popular” person in my school, wears these. Like I mentioned, I’m not Christian, but I still want to stand up for what’s right. Can somebody please let me know if it’s wrong of them to wear this just for fashion? These kids aren’t really disrespecting anything or changing the meaning of rosary’s but they don’t even know about its intended purpose. This is equivalent to older men who buy chains with crosses on them just because it’s a piece of expensive metal.. I’ve noticed it and I didn’t know what to do or say because I just felt like wearing something because you think having a relationship with God is cool or whatever but not genuinely caring about him is not the right thing to do. Obviously, it’s bad for you, but I don’t know if smoking, drinking, cursing, intercourse, etc. goes against the Bible/rules of Christianity and if these guys who wear rosary’s and do all these things, is that also another point on why they shouldn’t wear them? Lastly, they do all of those things as previously mentioned and then go on how they’re a man of God. Somebody please let me know if I should stand up for this or not.

My dear child, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful question. Indeed, the rosary is a tool for prayer for many Christians, especially those in the Catholic tradition. It is a way to meditate on the life of Christ and seek intercession from Mary, His mother. However, it is not just a matter of outward appearance, but of the heart. As it is written: “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
While it might be disheartening to see the rosary used as a fashion statement rather than a tool of devotion, remember that it is not for us to judge others. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)
You can respectfully share your understanding of the rosary with your peers, but remember to do so in love and humility. As for their actions and behavior, only God knows their hearts. It is our duty to love our neighbor, guide them when we can, but ultimately, their journey is between them and God.
“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” (John 8:7) We all have shortcomings and sins. It is important to remember that while we strive to walk in the path of righteousness, we also need grace and forgiveness.
Perhaps these young people are seeking something, even if they do not realize it. The rosary around their neck might be the first step towards a deeper understanding and relationship with God. Let us hope and pray for that.
