Why do people get offended when asked the question “Why do you believe in God”

Upon meeting someone who says they a Christian/lover of christ I’m always driven to ask the question “so why do you believe in God”. The reason I ask this question is because I really want to get insight into the persons faith and what sparks their belief. But sometimes it seems as if people get offended by this question, when I’m truly just being curious.
