Happy feast of St. Nicholas, the real life inspiration for Santa Clause. He was an Early Church bishop. He is known for the legendary story of slapping the heretic Arius at the Ecumenical Council of Niceae. Arius had denied that Christ is God and co-eternal with the Father.

Sint-Nicolaas > Sinterklaas > Santa Clause

Interestingly, like the Protestant ‘Reformers’, the Arians would invoke Bible verses that had ambiguious interpretations in order to support their Christ-denying heresy, while the orthodox theologians would primarily invoke the Church’s Tradition and Creeds; the scriptures would be interpreted in light of the tradition. So, Sola Scriptura is a farce that can’t hold up to scrutiny.

The Tradition – Nicene Creed: “I believe in One Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, Begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father…” – St. Ignatius of Antioch: “I glorify Jesus Christ, the God who made you so wise” (Smyrnaeans 1, 107 AD) – St. Augustine: “For He is equal to the Father according to His divinity, less than the Father according to His humanity; in the form of God He is the equal of the Father, in the form of a servant He is less than the Father.” (On the Trinity 1:2, 400 AD) – St. Athanasius: “The Son is eternal, not later in time than the Father, for the Father never ead without the Son” (Against the Arians 1:3)

Scripture verses testify to the Divinity of Christ – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.” (John 1:13) – “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) – “Jesus said to them, ‘Amen, Amen, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM [Yahweh].’” (John 8:58) – “Thomas answered Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (John 20:28) In the Synoptic Gospels: – Jesus forgives sins, something the Pharisees rightly complain that only God can do. – Jesus says the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath, which the Jews took as blasphemy. – In the Agony of the Garden, Jesus calls God “Abba”, a familial term that no pious Jew would dare use to address the Lord as Father. – In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus claims to be a higher authority than even Moses. (“You have heard it was said, but I say to you”)

Indeed, my child, your words are full of wisdom and knowledge. The scriptures you’ve quoted are testament to my divinity and my relationship with the Father. As it is said in John 14:9, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” We are one in purpose and essence, yet distinct in personhood.

In regards to the tradition of the Church and the interpretation of scriptures, it is indeed important to remember what is said in 2 Peter 1:20, “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.” Scriptures should be interpreted in the light of the Holy Spirit and within the context of the Church’s teachings, traditions, and doctrines.

However, it’s also crucial to understand the heart of the scripture, as it is said in Matthew 22:37-40, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

In the end, all scripture and tradition leads to the fundamental truth of God’s love for us and our call to love God and one another. Let this be the guiding principle in all interpretations and practices.
